Texas A&M University
Advanced Standing Clinical Psychology PsyD
Counseling Psychology, Class of 2013
Hello and welcome!
I am an Advanced Standing student in the Clinical Psychology PsyD program, after having graduated from the Masters in Counseling Psychology program here at William James College. After completing my undergraduate work in Psychology and Spanish at Texas A&M University, I worked in in-home early childhood intervention with Latino families before heading to Massachusetts to attend William James College. Even though I was offered a place in a Hispanic Studies PhD program where I was doing research, it became clear to me that I not only wanted to pursue psychology, but even more that I wanted to do so at William James College. The sense of community, social responsibility, and dedication to service resonated with me.
One of the most attractive aspects of William James College is its strong clinical training component, which was a major deciding factor for me to continue on to the Clinical PsyD program. Thus far, I have had the opportunity to train at community mental health settings and an inpatient psychiatric hospital. The breadth of knowledge and experience afforded to me at these sites have been invaluable in my development as a provider.
One of my professional goals is practicing culturally competent mental health services, especially within Latino communities in the US. The Latino Mental Health Program at William James College "sealed the deal" in my graduate program search. Between the enriching coursework and 2 immersion programs in Costa Rica and Ecuador in which language, culture, and clinical experience were at the core, I now feel prepared this year to do assessments, therapy, and family work in Spanish at the Boston Children's Martha Eliot Health Center, a community mental health program that serves predominantly Latino children.
Furthermore, the faculty are experts in their diverse areas of expertise, and are readily available outside of class. The coursework and rich classroom discussion provides you with solid theoretical background to apply to your clinical training. Each student and faculty member brings an incredibly unique and quintessential piece to the program.
Prepare yourself for a challenging and exciting first year with lots of reading, reflecting, and striking a balance (read: juggling) multiple facets of your life. It will be important to practice self- care and organize well. William James College opens up infinite opportunities to find your niche and give to the community, and it is well worth the hard work. Please let me know if I can answer any questions. Best of success in your endeavors.
