My name is Jessica R. Garcia. I am an Arizona native and made the trek to Massachusetts (specifically) to attend graduate school at William James College. I graduated, summa cum laude, from Arizona State University (the Barrett Honors College) with a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. I am a PsyD student in the Clinical Psychology program and also a part of the Latino Mental Health Program.

The Latino Mental Health Program was certainly a large factor in why I chose to attend William James College. Being able to work with the Latino population is a personal and professional goal of mine. When I found out that William James College was able to satisfy that I need I was hooked. Within the first hour of interview day I knew there was no doubt in my mind that I would be moving to the Boston area to attend graduate school. I was thoroughly impressed with the candidates on interview day. I knew that if I were accepted I would get the change and challenge that I craved.

William James College also gave me the opportunity to secure an amazing field placement for my practicum. I am also currently working with adolescent males with a range of behavioral and emotional issues who have a history of fire-setting and sexual offending. Although I have not completely decided what my future career goals will be I do aspire to work for the federal government in a clinical/legal capacity.

And, as a bit of advice to newcomers… get involved! Whether you're from the area or coming from another part of the world, I highly encourage you to actively participate in your education and give back to the school. I am the American Psychology and Law Society (AP-LS) campus representative for William James College, a Student Coordinating Committee rep for my class, student blogger for my academic program, and a work-study student. I love it! It is a great way to meet new people, network, and have a blast!
