Advanced Standing, Clinical Psychology PsyD
Class of 2016
As a William James College Student Ambassador, I am very happy to answer any questions or share my experiences with you – as honestly and concisely as I can. One reason I chose William James College was the diversity of the experience & backgrounds of faculty, students and staff – in addition to the superb qualifications of those who teach practical, practice skills for those of us choosing to become Clinical Psychologists in a variety of settings.
Like many others at William James College, my own professional path is non-traditional: Prior to joining our community, I earned a bachelors degree in English and Irish Studies from Boston College, and then spent four years working in publishing at Time, Inc. in New York City. A desire to engage with others in a service-oriented and person-centered career path led me to leave the field of publishing and pursue a masters degree in Mental Health Counseling from the Lynch Graduate School of Education at Boston College.
A primary clinical interest of mine is college student health & development, and much of my professional and clinical experience at the masters-level has been working with college students in a variety of settings, including mental health, substance use programming & education, and trauma. The field education component of the Clinical PsyD will allow me to build upon this experience with internship-level training to broaden both clinical development and competencies in a variety of settings. Areas of future clinical interest include work with veterans and first responders, as well as involvement in social justice initiatives and outreach.
The academic coursework of the Clinical Psychology PsyD program is rigorous, and it can often be difficult to balance assignments, clinical training, personal relationships and self care. However, my experience is that William James College offers a great skill building & support from advisors, mentors & internship experiences – so that students can truly develop a unique and well-grounded foundation as a scientist-practitioner.
