The faculty, staff and administration of William James College are committed to making our programs open and accessible to students with disabilities. In keeping with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504 if the Rehabilitation Act, students with documented disabilities will be provided with equal access to courses and school activities.
Students must self-identify as having a disability and must provide recent documentation from a health services provider which states the nature of their disability, describes how the disability affects the student's functioning and suggests possible accommodations that would allow the student equal access (Documentation Letter). Students who have had recent psychological or neuropsychological evaluations can provide those records as documentation. When a student provides documentation of a disability, he or she then meets with the Coordinator of the Academic Resource Center (ARC) (firstname.lastname@example.org) to discuss reasonable accommodations and to draw up an Accommodation Plan which the student can submit to his or her instructors. While every effort is made to develop an Accommodations Plan which meets the student's needs, the accommodations cannot change essential course requirements and must not impose an undue burden on school resources.
All disability documentation records are confidential. They are stored in the ARC Coordinator's office and are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). However, in order to insure that appropriate accommodations are provided, the ARC Coordinator may discuss some details about the disability accommodation records to instructors, academic advisors, the Dean of Students or other individuals or offices with an "educational need to know" as allowed by FERPA (ADA Confidentiality Agreement).
The Academic Resource Center routinely offer services such as writing and editing support, extended time for testing, separate rooms for testing, audio recording of lectures and provision of Power Point notes/outlines of material covered. A text-reading program is available to all students and closed captioning for video presentations or other accommodations are possible with advanced notice. The building is wheelchair accessible.
