Northern Vermont University
Clinical Mental Health Counseling MA
Forensic and Correctional Counseling Emphasis
Class of 2018

Hello and congratulations on pursuing your academic goals!

My name is Stella and I am a student in the Masters of Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program with an Emphasis in Forensic and Correctional Counseling. Prior to enrolling at William James College, I lived in Vermont and attended Northern Vermont University (formerly known as Lyndon State College).

During my undergraduate career, I majored in Criminal Justice and Human Services with a minor in Psychology. I was able to intern at a criminal defense law office as well as at an advocacy center for women and children survivors of domestic and sexual violence. I graduated summa cum laude and received school-wide recognition for my senior thesis project on the effects of pornography on sexuality and affiliation.

My undergraduate experiences were what pushed me to pursue forensic and correctional counseling. Having the opportunity to observe domestic and sexual crimes from both the perspective of the offender and the victim opened my eyes to the field of forensic psychology and I instantly knew that it would be my career passion.

When I began looking at graduate programs, William James College stood out to me as an academic environment that boasted highly experienced and clinically active faculty, small class size where discussion and practice are key, and an incomparable clinical practicum and internship opportunity for both first and second year students.

Upon my immersion into the William James College graduate program, I have been able to distinguish my career passions as treating sexual offenders, adolescents, and patients with PTSD/trauma. As a prospective student, I would encourage you to approach your graduate education at William James College with humility, courage, and an open mind. There is arguably nothing more rewarding than committing your career to helping people and discovering along the way that you are indeed skilled at doing so. The faculty and student body at William James College are there for you to discover those skills within yourself. Network, create friendships, and work hard!
