This is a course that investigates the individual experience of health, wellness and disease. Topics covered include healthy aging, the role of lifestyle in disease prevention, mind/body approaches to wellness and contributions of positive psychology to overall well being. Students will take a systems approach in exploring the ways in which our culture supports and limits good health, and a review of recent research on health promotion in multicultural settings within a public health framework.
Learning goals: Upon completion students will:
- Understand the contextual nature of the experience of health and illness
- Have a working knowledge of accepted guidelines of "lifestyle medicine"
- Understand the role of culture and society in health
