What is Resilience?

Resilience is defined as "the ability to recover from or adjust easily to misfortune or change.” Resilience is not something that kids either “have” or “don’t have,” it is a skillset that kids develop as they grow.

What is an achievement gap?

"The “achievement gap” in education refers to the disparity in academic performance between groups of students. The achievement gap shows up in grades, standardized-test scores, course selection, dropout rates, and college-completion rates, among other success measures" (Ansell, 2011, p. 1).

What is emotional intelligence?

Emotional intelligence refers to a set of skills that allow individuals to accurately consider and understand the emotional expressions of others and one's own emotional experience. Emotional intelligence is proposed to contribute to the ability to effectively regulate ones emotions, and to use emotions to organize behavior in accomplish goals (Salovey & Mayer, 1990).

What are Adverse Childhood Experiences?

Adverse Childhood Experiences, referred to as ACEs, are stressful or traumatic childhood experiences that have been studied for well over a decade by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in collaboration with Kaiser Permanente, and have been associated with medical and mental illness and premature death. These ACEs include physical, sexual and emotional abuse, neglect, witnessing violence, divorce and parental discord, growing up in a family with a caregiver experiencing mental illness, substance abuse or criminal involvement, and attempting or dying by suicide (Felitti, 2009).
