The Lucero Memorial 5K Run/Walk is going off-road this year. The course will start at William James College in Newton, MA. Runners will follow the Wells Avenue sidewalk to the Solomon Schechter Day School and run along the edge of its parking lot to the Cutler Park Reservation trail head (~0.5 mile). The initial portion of this 2 mile out-and-back section is a single track that outlines the perimeter of the Solomon Schechter’s field complex and is the most challenging section of the trail run. Runners will need to pay attention to their footing and watch for roots leading up to and through a slight incline. After ~100 yards, the winding single tracks opens up to the hard-packed surface of a double-wide trail for the majority of the section*, with slight dips and rises. before narrowing again to single track. The course leads to Millenium Park and the turn-around point will be at (or shortly before) where the trail intersects with the pavement
*At present, there are a few large, trail-wide puddles on the double-wide section. It is possible to navigate around the edges with minimal mud exposure, and we’ll update this description in the week prior to race day.
The 5K Lucero Run/ Walk was created in memory of Dr. Cynthia Lucero, a much-loved community- oriented William James College graduate from Ecuador who completed her doctoral degree days before the start of the 2002 Boston Marathon, during which she collapsed and died. The LMHP concentration carries her name and legacy. Race proceeds help to fund the Cynthia Lucero Scholarship program that supports WJC students dedicated to serving the Latino community.
