Our Name
William James (1842 –1910) is considered the founder of American psychology. He taught
the first psychology course, opened the first laboratory and wrote the first psychology
text book in the US. He was an advocate for social justice and equality across gender
and racial lines, and he believed that psychology was not an intellectual exercise, but
rather a path to healing communities and the individual human heart and mind.
We are proud to bear the name of this brilliant person and perpetuate
his legacy through our work here at William James College.
The audience is asked to stand and remain standing throughout the processional.
