Prior Experience

Dr. Julie Kohlhart, PhD, is an Assistant Professor in the Clinical Psychology PsyD program as of the fall of 2024. She previously worked as a Counseling Psychologist at the University of Kansas Medical Center, where she served as the training coordinator and provided individual and couples therapy to medical students and residents. She received a PhD in Counseling Psychology and a Master of Counseling and Guidance from the University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC). Dr. Kohlhart has worked in various settings, including community mental health, university counseling, and VA medical centers. She began her work as a master’s level therapist, providing substance use treatment to women on probation and parole. After receiving her PhD, Dr. Kohlhart completed a postdoctoral fellowship in university mental health, where she specialized in comprehensive diagnostic assessment for neurodivergent individuals, both in the college population and in a community setting. Dr. Kohlhart accepted a position in the UMKC Department of Counseling and Psychology, where she served as the director of the in-house community mental health training clinic between 2013 and 2022. Dr. Kohlhart supervised graduate students’ clinical practice and comprehensive assessment services, served as a member of dissertation committees, and taught clinical skills, substance use treatment, and assessment courses. Dr. Kohlhart also provided individual therapy at her private practice, largely specializing in LGBTQ+ populations, and offered pro bono gender-affirming letter-writing services for transgender healthcare. Her research interests stem from her clinical practice in trauma and substance use, assessment, clinical training, and supervision.
