William James College SMS/Text Messaging Statement
1. Introduction
William James College (“WJC” or “the College”) may use Short Message Service (“SMS”) and other text messaging services to communicate with students, prospective students and applicants, employees, alumni, program participants, and other individuals who interact with the College.
Text messaging may be used for purposes related to College programs, services, events, admissions, enrollment, academic and administrative activities, appointments, reminders, notifications, and other College operations.
Individual College departments or programs may provide additional information regarding the specific text messaging services they operate.
2. Consent to Receive Text Messages
Except where otherwise permitted by law, William James College sends non-emergency text messages only to individuals who have provided their mobile telephone number and consented to receive the applicable messages.
Consent to receive text messages must be voluntary. Consent to SMS communications is not required as a condition of applying to, enrolling at, receiving services from, or otherwise doing business with William James College unless text messaging is inherently necessary to provide a specifically requested service.
Where an SMS enrollment form or electronic form is used, consent will be presented separately from other required agreements or terms.
By opting in, you authorize William James College and service providers acting on its behalf to send text messages to the mobile telephone number you provided. Messages may be sent using automated messaging technology.
3. Types of Messages
Depending upon the service or program for which you have enrolled, WJC text messages may include:
- Admissions, application, or enrollment information;
- Registration, academic, or administrative reminders;
- Appointment or event reminders;
- Student service notifications;
- Program or departmental announcements;
- Account, service, or operational notifications;
- Requested information or responses;
- Emergency or safety-related communications; and
- Other College-related communications for which you have provided consent.
Enrollment in one type of SMS communication does not necessarily constitute consent to receive unrelated categories of text messages.
4. Message Frequency and Charges
Message frequency varies depending upon the College program, service, or activity in which you participate.
Message and data rates may apply according to your wireless carrier and mobile service plan. William James College does not charge recipients for SMS messages but is not responsible for charges imposed by a wireless carrier or service provider.
Delivery of SMS messages is subject to effective transmission by your wireless carrier and is not guaranteed by William James College.
5. Opting Out
You may withdraw your consent to receive non-emergency SMS messages at any time.
Reply STOP to a William James College text message to opt out of messages associated with that messaging service or telephone number.
You may receive a final confirmation message acknowledging your opt-out request. After the request has been processed, no additional messages from that messaging service will be sent unless you subsequently provide consent again.
Because the College may operate multiple SMS services or telephone numbers, opting out of one messaging service may not automatically opt you out of other WJC messaging services for which you separately enrolled.
Opting out of SMS communications does not prevent William James College from communicating with you through other authorized channels such as email, telephone, mail, or College systems.

7. Privacy and Use of Mobile Information
William James College uses mobile telephone numbers and SMS enrollment information for legitimate College communications, services, and operations.
Mobile information, including telephone numbers, SMS consent records, and SMS opt-in information, will not be sold, rented, or shared with third parties or affiliates for their own marketing or promotional purposes.
William James College may disclose mobile information to service providers that process or deliver communications on behalf of the College when necessary to provide the SMS service. Such service providers may use the information only as necessary to perform services for William James College and are subject to applicable contractual, privacy, and security requirements.
SMS consent and opt-in information will not be transferred to third parties for purposes unrelated to providing the communications or services requested by the recipient except where required by law.
8. Sensitive or Confidential Information
SMS should not be considered a secure method for transmitting sensitive or confidential information.
William James College will generally not request passwords, Social Security numbers, financial account information, protected health information, or other highly sensitive information through SMS.
Recipients should not send sensitive or confidential information to the College through text messaging unless specifically instructed to do so through an approved secure process.
Where additional information is required, WJC may direct recipients to an authenticated or otherwise approved College system.
9. Emergency Communications
William James College may use separate emergency notification systems to communicate urgent information involving health, safety, severe weather, campus operations, or other emergencies.
Emergency or public-safety communications may be governed by separate enrollment, notification, and legal requirements and may not be subject to all provisions governing optional non-emergency SMS communications.
10. Service Providers
William James College may use third-party communication platforms and telecommunications providers to deliver SMS messages on the College's behalf.
These providers process information necessary to transmit and manage SMS communications but are not authorized by William James College to use recipient mobile information or SMS consent information for their own marketing purposes.
11. Record of Consent
William James College and its authorized service providers may maintain records documenting SMS consent, including the telephone number provided, the date and method of consent, the communication program for which consent was provided, and subsequent opt-out requests.
These records may be maintained as necessary to administer College communications, document compliance, resolve disputes, and satisfy applicable legal and telecommunications requirements.
12. Changes to This Statement
William James College may update this SMS/Text Messaging Statement periodically to reflect changes in College practices, technology, telecommunications requirements, or applicable law.
