As the United States becomes more multiracial, multiethnic and multilingual, there is a growing need for mental health providers to be skilled in the assessment of culturally diverse clients and the delivery of culturally competent clinical services. The main goal of this course is to expose students, both in theory and practice, to a variety of psychological assessments, diagnostic evaluations and treatment interventions developed to address the unique needs of culturally and linguistically diverse clients. Through didactic and experiential activities, students will be introduced to innovative, culturally-responsive assessment methods and mental health interventions. The course is designed to increase students’ awareness, knowledge and skills to meet the psychological demands of clients of diverse cultural backgrounds—in particular those of Black/African, African-American and Caribbean heritage.
