Psychology Techniques and Interventions to Enhance Performance
CN542 - Psychology Techniques and Interventions to Enhance Performance
Credits: 3
This graduate-level course provides an applied, evidence-informed examination of psychological techniques and interventions to enhance performance across sport, performing arts, and other high-performance environments. Grounded in the scientist–practitioner model, students develop both conceptual understanding and applied skills central to mental performance consulting. Emphasis is placed on psychological skills training (PST), including goal setting, arousal regulation, attentional control, imagery, self-talk, and performance routines. Students learn to systematically assess and conceptualize performance challenges, select and apply appropriate interventions, and deliver strategies consistent with ethical guidelines and defined scope of practice, distinct from clinical assessment and treatment. The course focuses on the design, implementation, and evaluation of performance enhancement programs across individual, team, and organizational contexts. Experiential learning - including role-play and case analysis - supports the development of consulting, communication, and intervention delivery skills, as well as methods for monitoring progress and evaluating effectiveness. This course prepares students to engage in supervised applied experiences following coursework, in alignment with CMPC pathways.
