Gala celebrates name change and ongoing commitment to training the next generation of mental health providers and "Advancing Mental Health Together."

BOSTON – May 7, 2015 – The Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology (MSPP), a leader in educating mental health professionals and the largest graduate psychology program in New England, will formally announce that it is becoming William James College at the 2015 Annual Gala. The transition acknowledges the school’s evolution over the past 40 years to an institution with 900 students, faculty and staff and a network of 1,750 alumni. The Gala will be held on May 7 at the Boston Park Plaza Hotel at 6:00 pm.

The theme of this year’s event is “Advancing Mental Health Together,” capturing the college’s mission to bring conversations about mental health out of the shadows and into the spotlight.

“At William James College, we strive to provide critical care to diverse and often underserved populations in our community through unique and forward-thinking programs,” said Dr. Nicholas Covino, President of MSPP. “With the adoption of the William James name, we are carrying forward William James’s legacy of innovative, practical education in the field of psychology.”

The Gala will feature guest speaker Joe ‘Joey Pants’ Pantoliano, an award-winning actor best known for his roles in The Sopranos and The Matrix and currently starring in an off-Broadway play, ‘Great Kills.’ Inspired by his role in the film Canvas, Joe faced his own depression and made it his life’s mission to help others. An advocate for mental health awareness, he is the founder and president of No Kidding, Me Too!, a nonprofit aimed at removing the stigma with mental illness.

The Lynn Community Health Center, which provides primary care, behavioral health, specialty care, eye care, and dental services to everyone in its community, regardless of ability to pay, will be awarded for its extraordinary commitment to community health. The gala will be hosted by Joyce Kulhawik, an Emmy Award-winning arts and entertainment critic for CBS - Boston. North Shore Acappella will open the night with a three-song set.
