Special program for rhode Island residents

Earn 6 Free Credits Toward Your MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling!

William James College is offering two non-matriculated courses this summer for Rhode Island residents who work in Rhode Island behavioral health agencies who are interested in pursuing a master's degree in Clinical  Mental Health Counseling.

We are offering two graduate courses (3 credits each) this summer May 18–July 6, 2025 so you can try out our program at no cost to you. These courses can be transferred to our MA in Clinical Mental Health Counseling online program (or to the on-campus program), if you obtain a final grade of B or above. Classes are online, asynchronous, and last seven weeks. This means that you do not have to log in to Zoom at a designated time. You will watch lectures and videos, read course materials, and complete learning activities (quizzes, exams, discussion questions, papers, and/or projects) each week according to the course deadlines.

To be eligible, you must be employed by Family Services of Rhode Island, Tides Family Services, or Communities for People and qualify for Ladders to Licensure (L2L) tuition support. To confirm your eligibility for L2L tuition assistance, please contact info@williamjames.edu. You must also have completed an undergraduate (bachelor’s degree) to be eligible to take these courses.

Courses Offered

CN520 - Psychopathology
CN515 - Substance Use and Addiction Evaluation and Treatment

This is a great opportunity to explore graduate studies in the counseling field at a college that specializes in counseling, psychology and leadership!

This program is generously funded by the Rhode Island Executive Office of Health and Human Services Ladders to Licensure.

Need Assistance? Don’t let roadblocks stand in the way of your degree.

If you meet criteria, RI Reconnect can assist with debts and obligations that interfere with your ability to pay them, such as transportation to and from campus, groceries, childcare during training and classes, technology needs, and others. Your educational navigator is your personal representative who will guide through the process of returning to school or job training. The navigator will help you identify a goal, create a plan to reach that goal, and address barriers outside of the classroom that may prevent you from completing your education or training. Click here to begin a short assessment that will connect you with a navigator.

In the initial interview, the Navigator will ask a number of questions about your life as a student or prospective student. The program funds some requests for assistance, based on need and the degree to which the problem presents a barrier. For example, if you can’t afford a laptop and you need one in order to take an online course or to work on homework assignments, RI Reconnect will provide a laptop. Maybe you also need internet access too. Lack of connectivity is also a common barrier to education. Both of these requests for wrap-around services would be considered because they are needed in order to complete a degree or training.
