Leadership in Community Behavioral Health Fellowship

Be a Leader in Community Behavioral Health, and in Your Community.

 Funded by Mass General Brigham, the Leadership in Community Behavioral Health (LCBH) Fellowship aims to address the significant shortage of behavioral health providers from historically underserved communities who are underrepresented in leadership positions in community health centers in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.

Housed within the Center for Workforce Development at William James College, the LCBH Fellowship is designed to train and prepare graduates from the fields of counseling, psychology, and social work to serve as program administrators, supervisors, and/or organizational leaders in community health centers and community-based agencies that provide behavioral health services to historically excluded and underserved populations.

Applicants for the LCBH Fellowship must:

  • Self-identify as belonging to a group that is underrepresented in the field of behavioral health (e.g., ethnic, linguistic, or racial minority groups; first-generation college students; individuals with a disability; LBGTQIA+ groups; military/veteran personnel).
  • Hold a master’s or a doctoral degree in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or a related behavioral health field.
  • Have earned a graduate degrees in the past 7 years, including individuals who will graduate by the summer.
  • Reside, work, and/or practice in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Be licensed or license eligible in Massachusetts.
  • Have a demonstrated background in serving historically excluded and/or underserved populations.
  • Have a strong commitment to providing culturally-informed behavioral health services in a community health center or a community-based agency.
  • Be employed full-time at a community health center or a community-based agency.
  • Have a supervisory and/or leadership role in a community health center or agency.

First-year Fellows who enroll in the LCBH Program will:
  • Complete a Certificate Training Program on leadership and organizational development. 
    • The didactic seminars are held via Zoom and are offered on a weekly basis (i.e., Fridays from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.). 
    • The seminars occur during both the Fall and Spring semesters, and run from September through May (i.e., 15 weeks per semester). 
    • The orientation training is typically held on the first Friday after Labor Day.
  • Receive individual professional mentorship. 
    • Fellows are matched with a professional mentor with whom they meet for 1 hour per month via Zoom.
  • Participate in program evaluation activities.
    • Fellows complete a pre-/post-training leadership assessment measure. 
    • Fellows fill out feedback surveys for the didactic seminars. 
  • Receive an annual stipend (i.e., $7,500/year). 
    • The stipend is paid by William James College (WJC) and is disbursed on a monthly basis. 
  • Have an opportunity to mentor WJC graduate students. 
    • Fellows may request a mentee from WJC's behavioral health programs.
  • Be encouraged to engage in other professional development activities (e.g., attend webinars, conferences, and other events offered by WJC). 
Additionally, during their enrollment in the LCBH Program, Fellows must:
  • Be employed full-time at a community health center or a community-based agency in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. 
  • Have a leadership/supervisory role in a behavioral health agency that is located in an underserved community and/or serves populations from historically marginalized backgrounds. 
  • Engage in ongoing managerial, supervisory or other leadership-related roles at an eligible agency. 
  • Meet employer partners’ expectations and job requirements.
  • Obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI) number for data tracking purposes.
  • Maintain ongoing communication with the Fellowship staff. 
Note: Enrollment in the 2nd year of the LCBH Fellowship is by-invitation only. An offer to re-enroll in the Fellowship will be extended to Fellows who successfully complete the 1st year requirements as well as demonstrate consistent progress in achieving leadership goals and meeting supervisory roles and managerial responsibilities in their agencies.
