Hi! My name is Katie Hogan. I am a recent, first-generation graduate from Umass Amherst who was looking for a way to gain additional experience in the field without jumping directly into graduate school. The Behavioral Health Service Corps program was the ideal fit for my needs—as I've been able to work at a field site of my choice whilst still engaging in coursework. The culmination of hands-on learning, courses, mentorship, and faculty support have motivated me to continue towards my ambitions of graduate school and progress my professional development skills and outreach to other psychology professionals and students. William James College is unique because of this incredible opportunity and the abundance of supportive, uplifting, and responsive staff.

I am excited for the prospect of a future in counseling psychology, working with a population of children and adolescents. I'm one step closer and it's thanks to WJC! Through WJC, I've had the pleasure of being placed at a site where I work with mothers in early recovery from substance use and their children. I'm able to work directly with our on-site therapist, case manager, and clinical director to develop effective treatment plans and safety plans for the children whilst applying my curricula knowledge of childhood development in a therapeutic milieu fashion. I've greatly improved my communication skills in collaborating with the clinical team and building rapport with my clients. The hurdles of working with such a vulnerable population have become extremely rewarding at the same time and have furthered my desire to continue working with kids and making a difference in their lives.

I strongly encourage all students and those considering applying to feel confident in the support and willingness of the staff at WJC, who are always ready to meet you where you're at. I'm especially grateful for their efforts in making this field site opportunity possible for me! Not to mention the abundance of knowledge I've already learned from just one class, which has only expanded my consistent desires to improve at my field site each and every day and more importantly, fill the tools in my toolbox to be successful for wherever my path leads me following this program. My greatest recommendation is to not be afraid when you need help. Asking for help is commonly seen as a sign of weakness, but I've learned how much strength comes from it. The brightest individuals are always asking for help and there are a multitude of staff who are willing to guide you and support you though whatever challenge you are facing. No matter how big or small—WJC is here to help. You are NEVER alone through any experience!

The future generations need us and that starts with more passionate individuals who want to see them succeed! If this is you, join us for a remarkable period of self-growth and development!
