Hello! My name is Lauren Griffin, and I am from Westwood, Massachusetts. I am a psychology graduate of Stonehill College. I am also the first person in my family to obtain a bachelor's degree. I sought out and applied for the Behavioral Health Service Corps (BHSC) program, for I knew it was crucial for me to solidify a strong foundation in the mental health field by furthering my knowledge of effective therapeutic modalities and continuing to hone my clinical skills and passion for working alongside excluded groups prior to applying for graduate school.
The BHSC allowed me to embark on a journey of introspection through coursework in psychopathology, diversity, difference, and inclusion, and ethics, with the supportive mentorship from Dr. Damon Pryor, Dr. Amanda Korff, and my fellow scholars. This program was transformative in helping me further integrate my personal values rooted in morality, justice, and respect for difference into my work as a mental health counselor for adolescents with eating disorders at Monte Nido Walden in Dedham, MA.
My coursework and peer and faculty mentorship have, and since graduating from the BHSC, are pivotal resources in guiding me through working with adolescents and their families. Their support has been immeasurable as I clinically, ethically, and morally navigate providing gender affirming care within the context of eating disorders and family-based care.
This role has been immensely rewarding and prompted me to take the next step in my career. I plan to become a licensed mental health counselor and family and marriage therapist who serves adolescents, adults, and their families in a community setting utilizing evidence-based treatment.
As a first-generation student, I know how isolating navigating higher education can be. Please know you do not have to embark on this process alone. Myself, fellow ambassadors, current and previous students, as well as faculty and administration, are here to help, but it is up to you to advocate for it. Please do not hesitate to reach out. I would love to connect with you and offer encouragement and advice as you consider William James College for your graduate plans.
