CMGMH Local Service Learning and Cultural Immersion: Mental Health Literacy from a Kenyan Perspective
TR600 - CMGMH Local Service Learning and Cultural Immersion: Mental Health Literacy from a Kenyan Perspective
Credits: 1
This graduate-level course examines the dynamic intersection of mental health, education, and leadership on a global scale. Students will participate in an immersive, hands-on learning experience that applies innovative, tech-enabled strategies to address mental health challenges within educational systems. Specifically, WJC students will collaborate with Kenyan educators via Zoom to engage in discussions around assignments in the Positive Mental Health Literacy curriculum, developed in partnership with the Shamiri Institute.
In this course, students will adopt dual roles of both teacher and learner: bringing expertise in mental health diagnoses and treatment, while gaining insight from Kenyan educators, who are experts in youth education and the Kenyan cultural context. This cross-cultural collaboration, alongside curriculum design and leadership development, equips students with the critical skills necessary to navigate the complexities of global health and education landscapes.
By emphasizing the integration of mental health literacy into educational frameworks, this course prepares students for leadership roles that promote equity, foster innovation, and create sustainable solutions to global challenges in both mental health and education.
