President Nicholas Covino, Thomas Scott executive director, Massachusetts Association of School Superintendents, and Glenn Koocher, executive director, Massachusetts Association of School Committees, co-authored a Letter to the Editor in the January 28 edition of the Boston Globe, which discussed the mental health crisis currently affecting K-12 students.

While the letter states that the mental health crisis precedes the pandemic, two years of emergency management has only worsened the situation. To address the crisis, the letter calls for an emphasis on creating safe and supportive spaces for children.

"Schools are optimal environments to repair what the pandemic has broken. Predictable routines, emotional connections, and teamwork can help children cope with stress, foster positive relationships, and build resilience," the letter says.
