Dr. Jason Kaplan Authors Boston Globe Letter to the Editor on How to Tackle School Absenteeism

Dr. Jason Kaplan, associate professor and chair of the School Psychology Department at William James College, published a letter to the editor in the August 13, 2026, issue of The Boston Globe highlighting the vital role school psychologists play in addressing chronic absenteeism.

In his letter, Kaplan thanks the Globe editorial board for drawing attention to this important issue and emphasizes that reducing chronic absenteeism requires more than attendance data alone. He notes that school psychologists and other school-based mental health professionals help identify and address the underlying barriers to attendance while fostering supportive school environments that keep students engaged, connected, and on track for success.
