Dr. Jason Kaplan, associate professor and chair of the School Psychology Department at William James College, published a letter to the editor in the July 23, 2025 issue of The Boston Globe. He highlighted what he calls a "vital, but often overlooked resource" for child and adolescent mental health: school psychologists.

In his letter, Kaplan points out that school psychologists play a crucial role inside schools, where students spend most of their time, helping make mental health services more accessible.

"According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, half of all mental illness begins by age 14," he writes. "Despite the clear need, there are far too few school psychologists to meet the growing demand. The National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) recommends improving the student-to-psychologist ratio from a national average of 1,065 to 1 to 500 to 1."

Kaplan urges readers to support efforts to expand and strengthen the school psychology workforce.
